Abstract

Ten Horsegram varieties including three national checks and seven testing entries were evaluated following Randomized Block Design at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bijapur under rainfed conditions during late kharif of 2004, 2005 and 2006 years with a view to identify the best suitable variety for Northern Dry Zone of Karnataka. Among ten varieties, BJPL-1 gave maximum grain yield (987.96 kg/ha) followed by CRHG-04 (927.24 kg/ha) and KBHG-1 (900.77 kg/ha).The performance of these entries when tested at seven southern locations of All India Coordinated Trials was almost similar to the performance observed in Bijapur centre. It was concluded that BJPL-1 with high yielding nature due to high number of pods per plant (24.38), maximum number of seeds per pod (4.06), 100 seed weight (3.61 g), high fodder yield, resistant to iron chlorosis, fairly good protein % and multiple disease resistance is promising for cultivation under Northern Dry Zone of Karnataka.
