Abstract

A study was undertaken to characterize and classify the soils under the Distributary No. 48A of Malaprabha Right Bank Command of Karnataka. Soil survey was carried out to know the type and extent of soils prevailing the area. Detailed soil survey of the study area was carried out using IRS ID LISS III image and cadastral map. Twelve pedons were selected based on the variation in surface features. Characterization of the pedons was carried out for morphological, physical and chemical properties. The soil depths were medium to deep with clayey texture, alkaline soil reaction and calcium carbonate nodules distributed throughout out the profile. Prominent slicken sides were observed in sub-surface horizons. At family level, the pedons under study were classified as very fine clayey, smectitic, calcareous, isohyperthermic, Typic Haplusterts. Kiresur and Hanchinal series were identified in the study area and mapped into six mapping units dueto variation in slope, erosion and depth.
