Abstract

An attempt was made to determine land capability, soil irrigability and land suitability for different crops of the soils under 48A Distibutary of Malaprabha Right Bank Command (MRBC) in Karnataka. Detailed soil survey information was used for this exercise. The soils were classified at family level as very fine, smectitic, calcareous, isohyperthermic, Typic Haplusterts. Two soil series viz., Kiresur and Hanchinal were identified in the study area and were mapped into six mapping units. Land capability classification showed that majority of land belonged to class III followed by class IV with limitations of erosion, wetness and soil properties. The soils were marginally suitable for irrigation due to soil texture limitation. Soil site suitability evaluation for some major crops was carried out. Maize was found highly suitable for major portion of the study area and Cotton, Wheat, Maize, Soybean, Sorghum were moderately suitable.
