Effect of plant density on growth and yield in banana

S.I. Athani, R. Revanappa, P.R. Dharmati

Abstract

All the vegetative growth parameters were recorded at different stages from 45 days after planting (DAP) to 285 DAP. Initially in all the treatments, the increase was more prominent upto 195 DAP. Linear increase was observed with the advancement of growth in plant height, plant girth and number of suckers. With respect to number of functional leaves and leaf area, there was linear increase in all the treatments upto 195 DAP and decreased trend was observed from 225 DAP to 285 DAP. During all the stages of growth, except plant height, all the vegetative growth parameters were higher in the wider spacing (2.4 x 2.4 m) and lower in the closer spacing ((1.0 x 1.2 x 2.0 m). The closer spacing recorded maximum plant height (172.05 cm)  and yield,(28.00 t/ha) while, the wider spacing recorded minimum plant height(163.70 cm) and yield(11.67 t/ha).
