C.S. Danaraddi, Shashidhar Viraktamath

Abstract

Morphometrical studies comprising of fifteen characters of  Trigona iridipennis Smith from eight places of  Karnataka were made during 2006-07. Body length varied from 3.93 to 4.12 mm while width of  head, thorax and abdomen varied from 1.52 to 1.61, 1.38 to 1.61 and 1.27 to 1.51 mm, respectively. The proboscis  length varied from 1.30 to 1.41 mm. Other characters viz. wing, leg and inter-ocellar distance also varied. However, all these variations were not statistically significant. All the bees had five hamuli. These studies perhaps indicate occurrence of  T. iridipennis throughout Karnataka.
