An economic analysis for physical and financial progress of water user cooperative societies in Tungabhadra left bank canal command area

Abstract


The focus of the present study was on economic evaluation of physical and financial progress of participatory irrigation management farmers in Tungabhadra left bank canal command area. The study reveals the progress and impact of  PIM on irrigated area under WUCSs, members participation in WUCSs, nature of maintenance of irrigation channels and financial progress of WUCSs. A sample of 10 WUCSs were selected randomly each from head region middle and tail for the purpose of study. Thus, making the total of 30 WUCSs.  The technique of tabular analysis was employed.  Among the different categories of farmers, large number of small (54.30%) and marginal (61.40%) farmers became members of WUCSs at head region, while only 22.39 per cent of large farmers were members of WUCSs. Similar trend was observed at tail region of the command area. The irrigated area under the command area of WUCSs before the formation was 88.45 per cent and the same has increased to 95.27 per cent after the formation of WUCSs in the left bank canal command area of Tungabhadra project area. Similar trend was noticed in head, middle and tail region of canal command area (178). The results of nature of maintenance of irrigation channel by WUCSs showed the 250 per cent increase in amount of expenditure on maintenance of channels after the formation of WUCSs at head (266.07%) and tail (257.14%) reaches while it was 410 per cent at middle reach (222). The financial progress of societies revealed that extent of financial components such as share amount (44.99%), developmental charge (32.80%) and grants from CADA (39.99%) formed major share at head region as compared to middle (26.39%, 38.16% and 31.86%) and tail (28.62%, 29.04% and 28.15%), regions.
