Response of Mesta Varieties to Plant Population and Nitrogen Levels Under Dry Land Conditions

A.K. Guggari, M.N. Sheelavantar

Abstract

Pooled results of two years of a field experiment conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bijapur, Karnataka in medium black soil during 1998 and1999 consisting of 48 treatments with  four varieties (AS-73-CP-560, AMV-3, AMV-4 and Local), three plant populations (0.22, 0.33 and 0.66 million plants ha-1) and four nitrogen levels (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg ha-1) revealed that, fibre yield (982 kg ha-1), seed yield (646 kg ha-1), green matter (22.54 Mg ha-1) and dry stalk yields (5.49 Mg ha-1 ) were significantly higher with AS-73-CP-560 variety compared to local variety (588 kg ha-1, 214 kg ha-1, 14.47 Mg ha-1 and 3.48 Mg ha-1, respectively) but was on par with AMV-4 (883 kg ha-1, 636 kg ha-1, 20.74 Mg ha-1 and 4.92 Mg ha-1, respectively). Similar trend was noticed with respect to fibre equivalent yield, net returns and benefit cost ratio. Fibre yield and dry stalk yields of mesta  did not differ significantly due to variation in plant population from 0.22 to 0.66 million ha-1. Seed yield was significantly higher at lower plant population of 0.22 million ha-1 (554 kg ha-1) over medium and higher plant populations  of 0.33 and 0.66 million ha-1 (512  and 514 kg ha-1, respectively). Similarly, fibre equivalent yield, net returns and benefit cost ratio were higher with lower plant population. However, green matter yield increased significantly with increase in plant population. Application of 90 kg N ha-1 gave significantly higher fibre yield and seed yield (916 and 599 kg ha-1, respectively) compared to 0 and 30 kg N ha-1 but was on par with 60 kg N ha-1 (868 and 568 kg ha-1, respectively). Fibre weight per plant increased significantly with successive increase in nitrogen from 0 to 90 kg ha-1. Nitrogen at 60 and 90 kg ha-1 were on par with each other with respect to net returns and benefit cost ratio but significantly superior over 0 and 30 kg N ha-1.
