Perceived Training Needs of Potato Growers, Their Characteristics and Adoption Level

Abstract


The productivity level of potato is remarkably low in Karnataka due to unavoidable frequent climate changes and non adoption of improved technologies. In order to increase the productivity of potato, the recommended technology packages are to be adopted suited to the different situation.  The present study was conducted in Belur taluk of Hassan district in Karnataka state to assess the status of technologies in the field.  Majority of the potato growers had small holding and had medium education, little social participation, extension contact, extension participation, mass media use and belong to average income group.  Majority of the growers were adopted improved varieties, right season, optimum spacing.  Significant percentage of growers have not used the recommended size of the tuber, seed treatment, irrigation method, crop rotation, application of recommended quantity of fertilizers, pest and disease management practices.  They felt training in areas like identification of pests and diseases and their control, fertilizer application, crop rotation, as well as application of potash in the form of sulphate of potash.
