Identification of Promising High Yielding Sunhemp Cultivars for Northern Transitional Zone of Karnataka Under Rainfed Conditions

S.G. Parameswarappa, Kumar D. Lamani

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted during the Late Kharif seasons of 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 on medium black soils at Agricultural Research Station, Bailhongal to identify promising Sunhemp cultivars for the Northern Transitional Zone of Karnataka state.  Significantly higher seed and biomass yields were recorded with the cultivar SHV- 1 (1124 kg/ha and 16.6 t/ha) when grown as seed and green manuring crop to the extent of 53 and 42 per cent respectively over the existing check Local (533 kg/ha and 9.6 t/ha).  Cultivar SHV-1 also recorded highest test weight of 4.3 g/100 seed than the check Local (3.5 g/100 seed).  SHV-1 was also early maturing with 80 days and found resistant to aphids and thrips than the Local (112 days).  Thus, SHV-1 was found to be highly promising for both seed as well as green manuring crop and best suited for seed production in the Northern Transitional Zone of Karnataka.
