Abstract

Field surveys carried out during kharif, 2001 indicated that, the pest started appearing in the month of October and continued till the harvest of the crop. The population varied between zero to 18.00, zero to 22.00, zero to 21.00,2.00 to 24.00 and 3.00 to 26.00 in Raichur, Manvi, Sindhanoor, Sirguppa and Gangavati locations respectively. The pest was above economic threshold level and the peak population was recorded during second fortnight of November in Raichur, Manvi and Sindhanoor and during first fortnight of November in Sirguppa and Gangavati. A constant decline in the pest population was observed thereafter. Spiders and mirids were recorded as important natural enemies of BPH in the project area. A total of 17 species of spiders belonging to 14 genera representing 8 families were recorded during the present investigation. Pardosa sp. and Tetragnatha sp. belonging to Lycosodae and Tetragnathidae were the most dominant spider species. The results of the correlation studies made between BPH populations and abiotic and biotic factors revealed non-significant negative correlation Whereas, positive and non-significant correlation was found with morning and evening relative humidity BPH per hill showed positive but non-significant correlation with spiders per hill and significant positive correlation with mired bugs per hill.
