Water Management Strategies for Kagzi Lime Crop

Subhas Balaganvi, S.S. Kamathe

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to study the water requirement, irrigation efficiencies and economics of growing kagzi lime with three levels of drip irrigation (based on crop evapotranspiration, ET) and fertilizer application. The net water requirement of Kagzi lime for taking one bahar (one season yield) was varied from 5246.7 litres per plant to 8205.44 litres per plant in different drip irrigation levels, while it was 14575.00 litres per plant in case of traditional check basin method of irrigation system. The maximum water saving of 64.40% was observed in drip irrigation applied at 60% ET over check basin irrigation. The application and distribution efficiencies were higher in drip irrigation as compared to check basin irrigation. The higher water use efficiency of 6.56kg/m3 of water was observed in treatments drip irrigated at 60 per cent  crop ET. Drip irrigation at 100 per cent crop ET with 100 per cent recommend dose of fertilizer application has recorded highest netreturns of Rs. 31,643.00 per hectare. The maximum net returns of Rs. 49,457.00 per hectare can be obtained with drip irrigation at 0.6 crop ET with 100 per cent recommended dose of fertilizer if the water needed to irrigate one hectare of Kagzi lime orchard with check basin irrigation is fully diverted for drip irrigation.
