Development of TOLCV Resistant Hybrids in Tomato

P.R. Dharmatti, R.V. Patil, H.M. Bhagvanthgoudar

Abstract

Series of experiments were conducted from 1997-2000 under irrigated conditions to find out high yieldding TOLCV resistant tomato hybrids. Heterosis for tomato leaf curl virus (TOLCV) and fruit yield of 50 hybrids of tomato derived from Line x tester croses of 5 female (Alcobasa types) and 10 male parents were studied. The per cent heterosis was found signifcant for most of the characters. The Alcobasa genotypes have shown field resistance for TOLCV. The maximum fruit yield /plant and lower incidencey of TOLCV was recorded by 20/6 Alcobasa x L-58 followed by 20/4 Alcobasa x L-58 and 20/5 Alcobasa x N-229-8MF6. The validity of these crosses was confirmed during 1999 and 2000 and they exhibited strong correlation co-efficent between perse of crosses vs heterosis. Therefore the best cross combinations, viz., 20/6 Alcolasa & L-58, 20/5 Alcobasa x N-2298MF6& 20/4Alcobas x L-58 can be commercially exploited as summer tomato hybrids.
