Response of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) to Tillage Practices, Organics and Nitrogen Levels During Kharif Under Shallow Alfisols

R. Basavarajappa, A.S. Prabhakar

Abstract

Investigations to study the "Response of foxtail millet to tillage practices, organics and nitrogen levels during kharif in shallow alfisols were carried out during 1997-98 and,1998-99 at Agricultural Research Station, HanumanamattL Among different tillage practices, medium tillage and ridging recorded significantly higher grain yield (1307kg/ha) by 8.10, 17.21 and 27.38 per cent, respectively over medium tillage with flat bed sowing, shallow tillage and ridging and shallow tillage with flat bed sowing. Among different organic sources, enriched FYM + Azoypirillum recorded significantly higher grain yield (1395 kg/ha) by 3.71 and 21.10 per cent over application of Glyricidia and enriched FYM, respectively. Application of 60 kg N/ha recorded significantly higher grain yield (1407 kg/ha) by 16 and 60 per cent over 30 and 0 kg N/ha. Medium tillage and ridging with enriched FYM + Azospsrillum + 60 kg N/ha recorded significantly higher grain yield (2044 kg/ha) and next best was medium tillage and ridging with Glyricidia green manuring + 60 kg N/ha (1869 kg/ha).
