Abstract

A field experiment was carried out at Regional Research Station, Bijapur during 1997-99 to study the effect of Nitrogen Fixing Tress (NFTS) on growth and yield of bengalgram in vertisols. A trial consisted of two NFTs planted at 7.2 and 12.6m row spacing and at 1, 2 and 3m away from KFT. The results indicated that, growth and yield components of test crop {bengalgram} was significantly higher with Faidherbia abides than Hardwickia binata. The grain yield of bengalgrain was higher with Falbida by 18 per cant as compared to H.binata Grain yield of bengalgram did not differ significantly due to various distances from the tree line and row spacing but growing of bengalgram with H.binata at wider row spacing {12.6m} and with F.aibida at close< row spacing (7.2m) was found superior. Soil moisture at sowing was high at all stages of bengalgram with F.aibida,
