Abstract

Short term studies were made on the potassium uptake efficiency in fiftyfive day old seedlings of five flue cured tabacco genotypes by supplying 0,87 and 174 mg/1 of Potassium sulphate (equivalent to 0,39, 78 mg K/I) in sand culture for eight days. Potassium content and uptake in root, shoot was assessed both initially and at the end of eighth day. Significant differences were observed among the genotypes. The genotype two Bhavya, and II-1308 were found to posses higest potassium efficiency than others. .These two genotypes also showed relatively superior performance under field conditions with respect to pottassium nutrition in addition to better quality leaves, in view of the good correlation with field performance, it is suggested that this technique may be extended to large number of genotypes to obtain relevant information using shorter period of time
