D. Channa Naik, T.V. Muniyappa, M. Dinesh Kumar

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted on drill sown ragi at the agronomy field unit, Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore during Kharif season of 1995 and 1996 to find out the efficacy of the weed management methods and to compare weed control. Results revealed that weed free check and three mannual weedings at 20,40 and 60 DAS were onpar in respect to grain and straw yield of ragi. Butachlor, piuron, 2, 4, Sodium salt and Isoproturon when applied 12 days after sowing each either alone or with the combination of hoeing at 35 DAS obtained desirable levels of weed control besides achieving both grain (31-38 q/ha) and straw (58-71 q/ha) yields on par to each other respectively. Among these herbicides, butachlor application at 0.75 kg a.i./ha or 0.5 kg a.i ../ha along with hoeing recorded marginally higher grarn (36-38 q/ha) and straw (65-71 q/ha) yield due to lower weed density (10-13/m2) and dry weed biomass (0,9-1.05q/ha) at harvest that resulted in weed control efficiency more than 85 per cent. these hrbicides achieved benefit cost ratios in the range of 12- 38 depending on their cost it terms of return per rupee spent on weed controls.
