Abstract

A laboratory experiment was conducted to know the effect of salinity stress (0,4,a,and 12 dSm-1) on germination and seedling growth of pop sorghum cultivars during kharif 1999 at Main Research Station, Dharwad. Among the cultivars germination per cent was higher in Belavadi (95.83%) and Kambalihal-1 (94.17%), whereas, the seedling length was significantly higher in Byahatti-1 (10.34cm) and Talkal-4 (10.23cm ) while Jalihal-1 (906.01) and Mudenur- 2 (889.19) had higher vigour index. Among the salinity levels, the pop sorghum entries exhibited significant tolerance to moderately higher salinity stress (8 dSm-1) with respect to germination per cent, seedling length and vigour index.
