Chemical Properties of Coir Dust Based Composts and Their Influence on Plant Biomass Yield and Nutrient Uptake

Datta Amlan, L. Suseela Devi

Abstract

Coir dust based composts were prepared using different organic and inorgnic additives. The composts which received N, rockphosphate and miicronutrients as additives emerged as the best high value compost in terms of its nutrient composition. The study revealed that incorporation of lignin degrading organism like Pleurotus sajorcaju and N and RP is not sufficient to get a good quality matured compost. The efficiency of coir dust based composts were tested in the field using maize as the test crop. This high value compost with 50% RDF significantly improved the biomass production of test crop in an alfisol.
