M.C. Shivakumar, B. Umakantha, G. Devegouda

Abstract

An experiment was conducted using 2x2x2 factorial design to evaluate the effect of virginiamycin in 704 broiler chicks fed with two levels each of protein and energy for 42 days. Addition of virginiamycin to suboptimal protein sub optimal energy and normal protein sub optimal energy diets significantly improved body weight, feed efficiency and reduced litter moisture as compared to unsupplemanted controts. No death of birds was observed in any of the virginiamycin supplemented groups. Whereas a mortality rate of 1 .25 to 5 per cent was recorded in  unsupplemented controls. Further, dietary virginiamycin reduced the gut bacterial load.  Cost benefit analysis yielded greater returns in virginiamycin supplemented groups,.in conclusion, virginiamycin supplementation to suboptimal protein suboptimal energy and normal protein suboptimal energy diets resulted in improved bird performance.
