Influence of Zinc, Iron and Time of Nitrogen Application on Growth, Yield and Quality of Durum Wheat

N. Ananda, B.N. Patil

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2002-03 on deep vertisol at Research and Development Farm, Ugar Khurd, Belgaum district of Karnataka state.  The results of the study on influence of zinc, iron and time of nitrogen application indicated that the data on grain yield and quality parameters differed significantly, both due to zinc, iron and time of nitrogen application.  Combined application of zinc and iron each @ 25 kg per ha recorded significantly higher grain yield (42.23 q/ha), protein per cent (13.25%), -carotene content (8.26 ppm), sedimentation value (42.57 ml) as compared to control.  Maximum grain appearance score (5.83) and lower incidence of yellow berry (2.86%) were recorded in the treatment receiving combined application of zinc and iron each @ 25 kg per ha.  Among time of nitrogen application, nitrogen applied in three splits i.e., ½ basal + ¼ 1/3 30 DAS + 1/4 60 DAS and 1 basal + 30 DAS + 1 60 DAS recorded significantly higher grain yield and its attributes, protein per cent, b-carotene content, sedimentation value as compared to nitrogen applied in two splits i.e., ½ basal + ½ 30 DAS.  Application of nitrogen ½ basal + ¼ 30 DAS + ¼ 60 DAS recorded maximum grain appearance score (5.41) and lower incidence of yellow berry (5.60%).
