Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during rabi, 2002 on deep clay soil at Water Management  Research Centre, Belvatagi (Karnataka) to study the response of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) varieties to seed rate and time of sowing under late sown conditions in Malaprabha command Area.  Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) variety Annigeri-1  recorded significantly higher seed yield (1408 kg ha-1) over ICCV-2 (1332 kg ha-1). A seed rate of 87.5 kg ha-1 recorded significantly higher seed yield (1502 kg ha-1) compared to 75.0 kg ha-1 (1306 kg/ha) and 62.5 kg ha-1 (1222 kg/ha). Crop sown during November 1st week recorded significantly higher seed yield (1756 kg ha-1) cmpared to other dates of sowing (869 to 1603 kg/ha). The maximum net returns (Rs. 32,748 ha-1) and B:C ratio (3.26) were realized when cv. ICCV-2 was sown during November 1st week using a seed rate of 87.5 kg ha-1 because of higher price for Kabuli chickpea cv. ICCV-2. It can be concluded from the study that for late sown conditions of Malaprabha Command Area chickpea (cv. ICCV-2) is recommended with a seed rate of 87.5 kg ha-1 and sown during 1st week of November.
