Physical and Chemical Properties of Vertisols of Northern Transitional Tract of Karnataka

A.V. Gaddi, P.A. Sarangamath

Abstract

Three soil profile samples from ARS, Sankeshwar, ARS, Nippani and MRS, Dharwad were exposed, sampels were collected and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. The results revealed that the soils are clayey in nature. Higher bulk density and lower hydraulic conductivity were observed in irrigated vertisols of Sankeshwar and Nippani compared to Dharwad vertisols (rainfed). The soils were neutral to alkaline in reaction (pH 7.2 to 8.6) and electrical conductivity values ranged from 0.15 to 0.92 d Sm-1. The regular distribution of organic carbon with depth in these soils suggests alternation and homogenization within the pedon.
