Physical and Chemical Properties of Alfisols of Northern Transitional Tract of Karnataka

A.V. Gaddi, P.A. Sarangamath

Abstract

An investigation was carried out to characterize the alfisols of agroclimatic zone-8, Karnataka. The results of study indicated that soils were sandy clay loam to clay in texture. Hanumanmatti soils had highest aggregate stability, hydraulic conductivity (HC), maximum water holding capacity (MWHC), volume expansion (VE) and lowest bulk density (BD) as compared to the Kumbapur soils. Soils were slightly acidic to neutral in reactiion (pH 5.5 to 7.5) and electrical conductivity decreased down the profile. Calcium and magnesium were dominant on exchange site as well as in water soluble phase followed by sodium. Among the anions, chlorides were dominant followed by bicarbonates and sulphates.
