Abstract

A project on identification of research gaps in intercropping systems (ICS) under rainfed conditions in India was implemented with NATP funding by University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad as one of the co-operating centre for two years (September, 2000 to October, 2002). Information on intercropping systems was collected from 107 farmers comprising of marginal (36), small (27), medium (28) and large (16) categories. The data was collected from all the five talukas of Dharwad district and processed. As many as 11 intercropping systems were found to be practiced by the farmers. Onion + chilli + cotton, bengalgram + safflower and chilli +cotton were found to be three important intercropping systems based on yield, economics and LER values. The advantages and other cultivation aspects of intercropping systems were brought out along with gaps in research and researchable issues for further consideration.
