Nutritional Status of Trained Athletes of Dharwad City

Abstract


The nutritional status of 30 trained athletes (18 males and 12 females) was assessed by anthropometric measurements and by adequacy of food and nutrient uptake (24 h food recall method). The mean heights, weights, mid arm circumference and chest circumference of males were higher than the females. The mean heights and weights of athletes were higher when compared to ICMR standards for normal subjects and lesser when compared to mean heights and weights of African athletes. The food and nutrient adequacy was higher in males than females. The food adequacy was less than 60 per cent for vegetables, fruits, milk and meat. The intake of pulse and fats and oil was more than adequate. The energy, protein, thiamine and calcium was more than 60 per cent adequacy while the adequacy was less than 50 per cent for riboflavin,niacin, retinol, Vit. C iron.
