Development of Alternative Media Inputs to Economize Micropropagation in Sugarcane

Ganapati Hegde, M.S. Kuruvinshetty

Abstract

The study was conducted to develop alternative media inputs to economise micropropagation in sugarcane with three popular cultivars of sugarcane, viz., Co8014'Co85002' and 'CoC671’. Four sources of sucrose, viz., laboratory grade sucrose, diamond sugar and ordinary sugar including control (analytical grade sugar) used were found to be equally effective for shoot multiplication in all three cultivars studied. Commercial sugar can be used to make micropropagation cost-effective. Among the different levels of sucrose tried, one with 30 g 1-1 resulted in the highest overall shoot multiplication rate (5.40) and the plantlets were also of desirable quality. Alternative supportive agents, viz., acid washed fine sand, peat and sabudani were unsuitable as supportive agents to replace agar.
