Genetic Variability and Character Association Analysis in Sudan Grass (Sorghum Sudanese (Piper) Stapf)

K.G. Anup, S. Vijayakumar

Abstract

Estimation of genetic variability parameters and character association analysis were carried out in a collection of 79 Sudan grass germplasm lines evaluated during Rabi / Summer seasons of 1997-98 and 1998-99. High genotypic coefficient of variability together with high heritability and genetic advance was observed for total leaf area, green and dry fodder yields in main crop and green and dry fodder yields in ratoons. Green fodder yield had high positive correlation with leaf area, plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of nodes per plant crude protein and dry, fodder yield. Path analysis revealed that leaf area was the single major character which exhibited the highest positive direct effect on green fodder yield and crude protein; in addition all other independent characters had maximum indirect contribution through leaf area.
