Insect Pests Infesting Turmeric in Northern Karnataka

Abstract


A roving survey conducted in five districts of northern Karnataka on pest complex of turmeric revealed the prevalence of 63 species of phytophagous insects. Of these, 22 belonged to Coleoptera, 14 to Hemiptera, 10 to Lepidoptera, four each to Thysanoptera, Orthoptera, Diptera and five non insects. Based on the extent of damage, eight species are considered as major and remaining 55 as minor pests. Eighteen natural enemies were also encountered in the turmeric ecosystem.
