Abstract

Field experiments were conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station Bijapur on Typic Chromustert soil for four years (1999-2000 to 2002-2003) to know the effect of integrated plant nutrient supply system with special reference to N for rabi sorghum-chickpea crop rotation on crop yield and soil properties. The pooled analysis of four years data showed that application of 15 kg N through sunnhemp plus 20kg N through fertilizer significantly increased the rabi sorghum grain  (1695 kg ha-1) and fodder (3100 kg ha-1) yield compared to rest of the treatments. Similarly, application of 15 kg N through compost plus 20 kg N through inorganic fertilizer significantly produced highest chickpea grain yield (1021 kg ha-1) among the treatments. Soil properties such as organic carbon content and content of available nutrients increased significantly with organic source of nutrients compared to control. Application of compost or sunnhemp reduced the bulk density and improved the infiltration rate, water stable aggregates, hydraulic conductivity, available water content and maximum water holding capacity of the soils.
