Use of Wild Species Helianthus argophyllus in Sunflower Improvement

T. Manjula, A. Seetharam

Abstract

Thirty two lines after prebreeding from the interspecific cross Helianthus annusVar, Modern (2n = 34) X Helianthus argophyllus (2n = 34) were evaluated along with the checks to assess for yield and yield attributes including reaction to downy mildew and fertility restoration in CMS line. There was large variability for almost all the important agronomic traits, some lines had highest oil percent. Many of these lines were found to restore fertility to CMS(F) background. Ten lines exhibited resistance to downy mildew. These lines with desirable characters could be used in population improvement or in synthesis of hybrids.
