Abstract

Analysis of the extent and distribution of genetic diversity in crop plants is essential for optimizing sampling and breeding strategies. We used random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker to assess genetic diversity in a select group of sorghum genotypes. A high level of divergence of 93.2 per cent was detected among the genotypes. The genetic distance a high of 54.25 per cent between E36-1 and RSLG-262. The results indicated that the variation can be attributed to the divergence of the genotypes used. Therefore, our study indicates that RAPD markers are successful in identifying genetic diversity in sorghum genotypes.
