Irrigation Water Use Pattern and Productivity of Crops at Different Locations of Canal System inTungabhadra Project, Karnataka

L.B. Hugar

Abstract

The extent of water used by the farmers in kharif paddy in Left Bank Low Level Canal (LBLLC) system of Tungabhadra project, Karnataka was considerably higher (30.01%) than that of recommended level. On the contrary, light irrigated crops like groundnut-rabi/summer (-24.10%), hybrid jowar (-23.50%), sunflower (-19.54%) and cotton (-15.87%) used lower than recommended level of water requirement. However, the farms located nearer to the pipeoutlets used more than those located far off both in kharif paddy and light irrigated crops. Similarly, higher yields were obtained by the farms located nearer to the pipeoutlet in all crops in middle and tail regions. At head region, yields obtained at different pipeoutlets were on par due to adequate water supply. Contrastingly, lower yields were obtained by head end farms as compared to tail end farms at head region in kharif paddy mainly due to over irrigation and thus farmers were operating in III stage of classical production function.
