Abstract

The study made an attempt to analyze the seasonal changes and growth performance in the prices of eggs and chicken  in Dharwad district of Karnataka. The secondary data on prices, eggs and chicken  production were collected for the period from 1996 to 2003 from the various sources of government publications. The compound growth rate analysis, seasonal index and instability analysis for different poultry products of the district were employed. The results revealed that the supply of chicken had grown significantly (P<0.01) at 2.30 per cent per annum during period from 1996 to 2003. This was mainly due to the increased consumption of chicken. Where as the production of eggs also showed a significant (P<0.01) growth of 0.86 per cent in the same period. The seasonal indices for eggs and chicken price at each stages of market were highest in the month of December and January and lowest in the month of April. During the summer months the temperature could be quite high and during winter months it will be too low. This might had their impact on the demand for eggs-chicken ultimately lead to variation in prices of both. The variation in price over the years was found to be relatively higher. The higher fluctuation in prices might have resulted in wide variations in prices of eggs and chicken.
