Anthers with uninucleate microspores produced highest percentage of callus on MS medium supplemented with 2, 4-D (2.0 mg/l) along with kinetin (0.5 mg/l). Anthers of the genotype TS-3 produced maximum callus induction frequency, followed by Maruthi, ICPL-87 and GS-1. There was no sign of shoot bud differentiation from cultured anthers on any of the regeneration media tried. Nodular, embryonic nature of calli was observed after second subculture on medium with BAP (2.0 mg/l). Browning of calli was observed after third or fourth subculture.
