Performance of Chrysoperia carnea Stephens against Pigeonpea Pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner)

Rajendra Hegde, S. Lingappa

Abstract

Field studies were made to assess the impact of artificial release of Chrysoperia carnea Stephens at different dosage levels (0.00,0.50,0.75,1.00 and 1.25 lakh/ha) against the pod borer, Helicoverpa arrnigera (Hubner) on pigeonpea. Realease of the biocontrol agent @1.25 lakhs/ha reduced the pod borer egg (30.08%) and larval (24.41%) population in pigeonpea. Pot and grain damage were reduced to the extent of 5 per cent with the release of C. carnea @ 1.0 and 1.25 lakh per ha over control. Grain yield was highest with these two dosage levels. A rupee investment using highly effective dosage level (1.25 lakh/ha) resulted in return of nearly 10 paise.
