Farm level Losses in Selected Agricultural Commodities in Dharwad Taluka.

Abstract


The present study was conducted in Dharwad Taluka of Dharwad District in Karnataka during the year 1995-96, with the overall objective of assessing the storage losses of foodgrains/ vegetables at various stages in selected three villages, from each village 20 respondents were selected and thus the total sample was sixty. About 5.89 per cent of the total foodgrains produced were lost on the farm itself and 5.65 per cent of the loss (excluding potato) was noticed at different stages. The analysis of individual crop has revealed that the highest percentage of losses were noticed in safflower (9.09 per cent), paddy (9.03 per cent) and in Jowar it was 8.94 per cent of total production. Apart from foodgrains, the potato crop accounted for major loss both on the farm and at various stages which accounted for 16.91 per cent of total production. Among the different stages of losses indentified the harvesting and storage stages accounted for major losses which constituted 2.59 per cent and 1.33 per cent, respectively.
