Abstract

The study was conducted during Oct-Dec (Winter 94) to evaluate the methods of vermicomposting under open field condition. Among the two methods evaluated, heap system of composting was proved to be a better method of biodegradation of wastes than pit method. Heap method of composting recorded higher population growth with 20.37-20.86 folds increase as compared to 16.64-17.79 folds increase in pit method. The biomass production was also significantly higher (44.76-47.33 folds) in heap method than the pit system of composting (31.33-31.70 folds). Consequent production of vermicompost was also higher in heap method (49.50-51.40kg) as against 37.54-41.30 kg in case of pit method.
