Seasonal Variation in Coastal Current Patterns in the Arabian Sea of Mangalore

E.G. Jayaraj

Abstract

Coastal current patterns of Mangalore along the coast of India have been measured, at eight stations along two sections using a Lynx direct leading and direction finding current meter. The currents for surface, mid-depth and bottom waters reveal variations from month to month, either directed towards or away from the coast and some times parallel to the coast. The speed of currents varied from 0.040 m/sec to 0.610 m/sec : 0.075 m/sec to 0.693 m/sec and 0.073 m/sec to 0.660 m/sec, respectively for surface, mid-depth and bottom waters. In sgeneral, the surface south during south west monsoon period. February-March appears to be the transitional period for reversal of currents. The influence of wind and tides on coastal current patterns has also been discussed.
