Abstract

In this investigation, a vertical Hele-shaw model was fabricated to simulate a two dimensional phreatic flow over an impervous boundary. Various scale factors were developed based on similitude principles for construction of the model. The utility of the model is shown by verifying the two subsurface drain spacing formulae viz., (i) United States Bureau of Reclamation (ii) Glovers by conducting laboratory experiments. The closeness of the computed simulation of boundary and initial conditions of the above two equations. The magnitude of error in calculation of drain spacings with the actual value worked out to be 10.5% and 3.56% respectively.
