Solar driers for low capacity household purposes made of winnowing type bamboo trays were developed. The driers were evaluated for drying figs ( Bellary Variety ). The temparature range inside the drier was found to be 42 to 75°C which is suitable for fig dehydration. The solar drier took 42 hours for drying figs from an initial moisture content of 78% (wb) to a final moisture content of 16% (wb) when compared to 60 hours in sun drying. The rehydration ratio was estimated as 10:15. The quality of solar dried figs were found superior to the sun dried samples. The unit cost of the drier is Rs.50/-.
