Abstract

The performance of different groups of crosses and parents were tested at main Research Station, Dharwad against midge, Contarinia sorghicola (Coq) incidence and yield in sorghum. Large amount of variation was observed for all the characters. The crosses between resistant parents (R x R) performed better for grain damage and yield with less damage. The crosses between susceptible and resistant parents (S x R and R x S) suffered moderate damage. Heterosis for grain damage was in R x S crosses, while the rest (R x R, S x S and S x R) exhibited more or less moderate heterosis. The cross combination of R x R were the best for low midge incidence and high and could be utilized for further breeding programme.
