Effect of Intercropping on Incidence and Damage by Helicoverpa armigera in Pigeonpea

Rajendra Hegde, S. Lingappa

Abstract

Field investigations were conducted to know the effect of intercrops (cowpea, soybean, setaria, sorghum and bajra) on the incidence and damage by the pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera, at Dharwad, Karnataka, Egg load on sole crop and intercropped with cowpea, being at par with each other, had less number of eggs than any other intercropping system. Significantly higher egg abundance was noticed in sorghum and bajra intercroppings, followed by intercropping with setaria and soybean. Growing sorghum with pigeonpea favoured the activity of pod borer larvae. Pod damage on pigeonpea was significantly high with setaria, sorghum and bajra. However, the same between sole crop and with cowpea and soybean did not differ. Grain damage was considerably more in pigeonpea with sorghum and bajra. None of the intercrops was able to improve the grain yield over sole crop. However, the total economic returns out of cowpea, soybean and setaria intercroppings were more than from pure crop.
