Abstract

Exploitation of heterosis or hybrid vigour is an important approach of crop improvement adopted in many of the crops all over the world. Gene action studies showed predominant non-additive gene action for all characters. The magnitude of heterosis over commercial check (MBTH-101) was very high for all the characters. The lines, Gadag local (0.27), Pusa Vishesh (0.23), Coimbatore Green Long (0.10) and IC-68310 (0.08) were identified as the good general combiners for fruit yield per vine in order of their merit. The hybrids Gadag local x Pusa Vishesh (0.88) and Gadag local x Coimbatore Green Long (0.68) were identified as good specific combiners for total fruit yield per vine and yield characters, days to opening of first male flower, days to opening of first female flower and number of fruits per vine.
