Abstract

Efforts made at Fodder Research Scheme, MRS, Dharwad since 1975 to 1986 resulted in the evolution of high yielding, very nutritious variety of fodder maize 'Ksheeramrutha' which was released during 1989 for cultivation by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. It is quick growing, tall and more leafy. It retains green leaves even at physiological maturity and this makes it to be more suited for fodder. Its dry forage yields were higher compared to synthetic and hybrid maize types. In comparison with F1s and F2s of Deccan 101 hybrid maize which are usualy grown for fodder in Karnataka, its forage yields and crude protein yields were far superior. In Agronomy trials, its dry forage yields and crude protein yields were highest when mixed with high seed rate (18 kg/ha) of cowpea. In another trial, mixing black soya gave higher forage and crude protein yields closely followed by maize cowpea mixture. Other legumes like greengram, kidneybean, horsegram and cluster been did not increase the forage and crude protein yields compared to sole ‘Ksheeramrutha’.s
