Distribution Pattern and Availability of Phosphorus in Some Vertisols of Tungabhadra Command, Karnataka

M.S. Patagundi, H.T. Channal, T. Satyanarayana

Abstract

Twelve Vertisol profiles, occurring in the Command of Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal, were investigated for distribution pattern of various forms of inorganic phosphorus and available P Status. Total inorganic P in the soils varied from 137.6 to 292.8 ppm and the relative abundance of its forms followed the order: saloid P < Fe-P < occluded P<A1-P <Red-P <Ca-P. The dominance of Ca-p appeared to be related to Ca- salts other than CaCo3, since Ca-p was negatively correlated with CaC03. Aluminium P and Ca-P were found to be controlling available P which, being generally medium in supply, was not affected much by soil properties, except pH and organic carbon. The effect of electrical conductivity or exchangeable-Na on P availability was not pronounced.
