S. Vijaykumar, Ramesh Babu, S.K. Gumaste

Abstract

A plant with an increased number of tillers and leaves was selected for seedling progenies of guinea grass (Panicum maximum) variety Reversdale, an introduction from Australia. This selection was evaluated under rainfed conditions at Bijapur during 1989-91, under irrigated conditions at Arabhavi during 1988-91 and under assured rainfed conditions at Dharwad during 1987-90. The selection showed 23.3% superiority in green forage yield compared with local guinea grass across years and seasons. It was also superior in quality parameters, with high crude protein and low crude fibre contents. No incidence of pests and diseases was observed. The selection was released for general cultivation during 1992 under the name Nandini.
