Girls in the group of 8-15 years were drawn cross sectionally (603 girls) from urban and rural areas of Dharwad and Hiriyur taluka. The age at attainment of menarche was collected using an interview schedule. The urban girls had menarche earlier than rural girls, also girls of Dharwad taluka attained menarche earlier than Hiriyur. Significant asso­ciation was observed between the weight and attainment of menarche.
