Abstract

Diallel crosses of 10 varieties of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) were evaluated for heterosis of 10 quantitative characters. A high degree of heterosis was observed for all the characters studied. With respect to marketable yield (weight of good pods/plant), earliness and pod borer (Earias spp.) resistance, the crosses IHR4 x Pl 489782 and Pusa sawani x Smooth green showed favourable heterosis, while Smooth green x Pl 489782 and Smooth green x Pl 496681 were excellent with respect to earliness, pod borer resistance and optimum pod length (8-10 cm).
