Performance of Fodder Sorghum Variety DFJ - 1

Ramesh Babu, Subhash Gumaste, T.C. Patil

Abstract

A series of trials conducted to replace less juicy brittle stemmed J-set-3 resulted in the evolution of DFJ-1. Cultures having soft and more juicy stem were crossed with fodder sorghum J-set-3. Further, selections were made. DFJ-1 which is a derivative of 4797 x J-set-3 was superior over J-set-3 in green forage yield (41.48 t/ha) with more plant height (304.2 cm), more leaves (15.66) and high per day productivity of dry matter (95 kg/ha). The proximate analysis indicated high crude protein (7.30%) and soluble carbohydrates (50.78%) and less crude fibre (33.29%) in DFJ-1 due to soft and juicy stem as against 6.48, 46.95 and 37.14 per cent, respectively, with J-set-3. The ratoon yields were also higher. It performed better over locations and in farm trials. The incidence of pests and diseases was negligible on DFJ-1.
