Abstract
A field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural College Farm, Dharwad, Karnataka during kharif seasons of 1984, 1985 and 1986 to study the fodder yielding ability of sweet sorghum types, viz. Roma, Rio, Theis, Dale and Brandies using J-set-3 and SB-1079 as local checks. In the main crop yield J-set-3 and Brandies were on par. In ratoon crop, Dale produced significantly higher yield (4.07 t/ha of dry matter). However, in the total yield (main plus ratoon) J-set-3 and Brandies were found superior. These two entries produced a total green fodder yield of 85.55 t/ha and 83.16 t/ha and dry fodder yield of 15.65 t/ha and 15.27 t/ha respectively. With regard to quality of fodder, Brandies had more juicy and less brittle stem than J-set-3. Per cent total soluble solids in 'Brandies' and J-set-3 was 13.78 and 9.64 and the crude fibre per cent was 37.26 and 31.24 respectively
